Adding Your Organization
When you open the VolunteerMatters mobile app for the first time, you will be asked to add your organization.
If this is your first time using the app, you will automatically see the Add Organization screen. Enter your organization’s customer code. The customer code is the first part of your organization’s VolunteerMatters website address.
For example, if the website address is example.volunteermatters.org, the customer code is example.
After you enter the customer code, wait until you see a green check mark, then tap Add Organization.
Next, you will see the My Organizations screen. Tap the organization you just added. You will see a message asking for permission to sign in. Tap Continue.
The app will open your organization’s VolunteerMatters sign-in page. Log in using the username and password you created when you registered.
Once you sign in, you will be taken to the app’s home screen. You will see your name at the top of the screen, along with your volunteer history, announcements, and a reminders section that will highlight any shifts you are eligible to check in to.
Using the App
In addition to the Home screen, the app has three additional main pages:
Assignments
Catalog
Profile
Each section is explained in more detail below. Most volunteers will spend the majority of their time on the Assignments page. This page is divided into two sections—one for your current assignments and one for your past assignments—making it easy to see what you are working on now and what you have completed in the past.
Home
On the home page, as mentioned above, you will see your name at the top of the screen, along with your volunteer history, announcements (which can be closed), and a reminders section that will highlight any shifts you are eligible to check in to.
When you log in on the day of your shift, the app will show you the shifts that are available for check-in based on the schedule set by your organization. You can check in during the allowed time window - typically a short period before and after your shift starts - so you don't have to wait until the exact start time to begin. Once checked in, your hours are automatically tracked and recorded correctly for your service.
For organizations that use geolocation, the app can also confirm your location before allowing check-in. This means you may need to be a certain distance from the project or event location to check in on your device. If you’re within the required range, just tap Check In and you’ll be signed in for your shift. When your work is complete, you can check out (if the project requires it), and your total hours will be logged based on your actual check-in and check-out times.
Check In to a Shift
Open the VolunteerMatters app on the day of your shift.
Go to the Home screen.
In the "Reminders" section you will see your shift assignments that are eligible for Check Ins
Tap the Check In button to open the assignment screen.
Tap Check In button at the bottom of the screen.
If your check in was successful, you will see a success message.
After you check in, the app records your check-in time, and your shift hours can adjust based on your actual check-in time (depending on how your organization set up the shift).
Check In With Geolocation (If Your Organization Uses It)
Some shifts require location checking (geolocation).
When you tap Check In, the app may check whether you are close enough to the shift location.
If you are within the allowed distance, your check-in will work normally.
If you are not close enough, you’ll see a message that you must be within a certain distance to check in. The allowed distance is set by your organization.
Tip: If geolocation is required, make sure your phone’s Location Services are turned on for the app.
Check Out of a Shift (If required)
Whether you need to check out depends on how an administrator has set your project up. Some shifts only require check in as an attendance feature. If you have any questions, please contact your organization’s volunteer coordinator for assistance.
After you have checked in, return to the same shift in the app when you’re ready to leave.
Tap Check Out (only available when the project is set to “Check In and Out”).
You will see a message confirming you are checked out.
If you forget to check out, the system will use the scheduled end time of the shift as your check-out time.
If your check out was successful, you will see a success message.
After you check out, the app records your check-out time, and your shift hours will adjust based on your actual check-in and check-out times.
Notes About Check-In Windows and Multiple Checkouts
You will only see the Check In option when your shift is within your organization’s allowed sign-in timing window (a set time before the shift starts and a set time after it starts).
A volunteer can check out once, but if they later need to check back in again, the system may create a second assignment automatically.
Assignments
The assignments page is divided into two sections—one for your current assignments and one for your past assignments—making it easy to see what you are working on now and what you have completed in the past.
With your current assignments, you are able to view and manage your upcoming shifts, check in to eligible shifts (identical to the Home page option above), submit/edit/remove hours for your current position assignments (if configured to allow), as well as view items to be delivered and tasks to be completed.

Catalog
VolunteerMatters extends the experience beyond the mobile app with an online (web) project catalog that makes it easy for volunteers to discover opportunities and commit in just a few clicks without leaving the mobile app. The project catalog is the same display as the web portal version.
Browse the project catalog (web version)
Volunteers can access the web-based catalog to explore available projects and current needs. The catalog supports quick discovery through clear project cards and details, helping volunteers understand what’s required before committing.
Sign up for available needs
When a project has open needs (shifts, positions, items, or tasks), volunteers can select an available need and sign up directly from the web experience within the mobile app. Once signed up, the volunteer’s commitment is recorded and reflected the current assignment list.
Profile
The VolunteerMatters online experience complements the mobile app by giving volunteers a simple, self-service way to manage their profile information and get help when they need it.
Edit your profile
Volunteers can update their personal information from the web, such as contact details and preferences, ensuring their profile information remains accurate across the platform.
Update your profile photo
Volunteers can upload or change their profile photo separately from profile editing. This makes it easy to keep their photo current without modifying other profile details. Note: If a volunteer chooses to take a photo using their mobile device, they will be prompted to grant camera permission on their device in order to complete the update.
Submit support tickets
If volunteers need help or run into technical issues, they can submit support tickets through the online experience. Requests are routed to the appropriate support team, making it easy to ask questions, report issues, and track assistance without leaving the platform.
If you have trouble finding or installing the app, submit a support ticket via support@volunteermatters.com, live chat from your VolunteerMatters system (Professional subscriptions and above), or contact your organization’s volunteer coordinator for assistance.
