WedgeHR allows organizations using VolunteerMatters to screen volunteers using short on-demand video interviews. Volunteers can record their responses at a time that works for them, and administrators can review responses directly from links within VolunteerMatters.
What WedgeHR Does
WedgeHR helps your team screen volunteers using on-demand video interviews.
Instead of scheduling phone calls or meetings, volunteers can record responses to a few questions at a time that works best for them.
The typical process looks like this:
- An administrator creates a short video interview in WedgeHR
- The volunteer is invited to complete the interview
- The volunteer records responses using their phone or computer
- Administrators review responses directly from links within VolunteerMatters
No scheduling or downloads are required for the volunteer.
What You Need Before You Begin
Before connecting WedgeHR to VolunteerMatters, make sure:
- You have an active WedgeHR add-on subscription with VolunteerMatters which is required for this integration to function properly. If your organization already has a WedgeHR account or would like to learn more about adding WedgeHR to your VolunteerMatters subscription, please contact sales@volunteermatters.com for pricing and subscription details.
- You have Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge installed.
- The WedgeHR browser extension installed and connected within your browser.
The extension is required because it enables WedgeHR features to appear inside VolunteerMatters.
After the add-on has been added to your VolunteerMatters subscription, you can proceed with the steps below.
Step 1: Activate Your WedgeHR Account
Your organization will receive an invitation to activate your WedgeHR account.
Once your WedgeHR account is active:
- Go to wedgehr.com
- Sign in using the credentials provided by WedgeHR
- You will land on the Interviews page, which is where interviews are created and managed.
Step 2: Install the WedgeHR Browser Extension
The WedgeHR browser extension allows WedgeHR features to appear inside VolunteerMatters.
To install the extension:
- Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
- Visit: https://wedge.link/extension
- Click Add to Chrome (or Get in Microsoft Edge)
- Confirm the installation
Connect the Extension
- Click the puzzle icon in your browser toolbar
- Select the WedgeHR Extension
- Click Connect
- Sign in to your WedgeHR account
Once connected, you will see a confirmation message.
Tip: Pin the extension to your browser toolbar for easy access.
Step 3: Access WedgeHR from VolunteerMatters and Configure Credential
Once the extension is installed and the account is connected, WedgeHR functionality will appear inside the VolunteerMatters account automatically once there is an Agreement Credential labeled "Wedge Interview". Without this specific credential name, the integration will not function as expected. If you need to create this credential, you can follow these instructions to do so. You can update the credential language and settings as needed. Example language is included below.
Volunteer Instructions:
"Thanks for your interest! To move forward, we use WedgeHR—a video interview platform designed to make the process easy and flexible for you. You’ll need a quiet space, a device with a camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection. No apps or downloads are necessary; you can record your responses right from your browser.
You’ll be asked a series of pre-set questions and have time to think before answering. You can complete the interview at your convenience before the deadline we provide. This helps us get to know you beyond your resume and gives you a chance to showcase your personality and communication style.
Once submitted, our team will review your video and follow up with next steps."
Agree-to-Statement:
"I agree that participate in my Wedge Interview. I understand that I will not be able to participate in volunteer activities requiring this interview until I have completed the interview and been approved."
NOTE: If you only have a single interview for volunteers, you can add the "Open Invitations" link to the credential volunteer instructions, to have the volunteers start the process for themselves. For more information on "Open Invitations" click here.
The example instructions language above can then be updated to include:
"To begin the interview process, please use the following link: OPEN INVITATION LINK FROM WEDGEHR
You will be asked to enter your email address and phone number. Please be sure to use the same email address associated with your volunteer portal registration so we can accurately match your interview to your application."
Once the credential is activated, and the extension enabled and connected, the credential in the system will display the Wedge button in the volunteer credential list (once someone signs the credential), the Cross-Project Credential Conflict report, Per Project Credential Conflict reports, and from the contact record itself. This credential-based action button allows you to send a WedgeHR interview invitation, send reminders, a view completed interview.
On a volunteer's contact record, you will also see that same credential-based action button.

Step 4: Create Your First Interview at WedgeHR
Interviews are created directly inside your WedgeHR account.
From the WedgeHR Interviews page:
- Click Create Interview
- Enter a clear interview title (often the volunteer role)
- Add prompts or questions
Best Practices
Most successful interviews include:
- 3–5 questions
- Clear and conversational wording
- Questions related to volunteer experience or motivation
You may:
- Select questions from the WedgeHR Question Library
- Record your own prompts
- Add an introduction and closing message

Step 5: Invite, Review, and Approve Volunteers
Once your interview(s) are created, invitations are managed directly from VolunteerMatters.
You can send invitations, reminders, and link to the completed interviews via the Wedge button in VolunteerMatters.
Sending from the Volunteer Credentials list
Note: The volunteer must have already signed the credential, or administrator manually added the credential to the volunteer's contact record to be able to view the credential in this list.
- Log into VolunteerMatters and click Credentials from the left-hand side navigation.
- This will bring you to the Credential Dashboard. From here you can either click the Volunteer Credential button link at the top of the screen and manually filter for the Wedge Interview credential, or you can click on the Wedge Interview credential number count in either your "Credential Status Change Counts (Past 30 Days)" or "Credential Status Counts" portlets and this will take you to the Volunteer Credential page with the filter automatically set. For example, if you clicked on the number for the Wedge Interview credential under the submitted column in the "Credential Status Change Counts (Past 30 Days)" portlet, the filter would automatically include the Wedge Interview credentials, status=submitted, and the Status Change Date=Last 30 Days.
- Once on the Volunteer Credential page with the proper filters, it will list those volunteers and the current status of the Wedge button will reflect if an interview still needs to be sent, interviews that have been requested and are still outstanding, and for those completed, a link to view the interview at your WedgeHR account.
- To initiate a new interview request, click the Send Invite button.
- This will open a modal window popup where you can select the proper interview for the volunteer. Then click the "Send Invite" button.
- This close the popup and return you to the Volunteer Credentials page with a temporary success message and the Wedge button will update to "Send Reminder".
Sending from the Credential Conflict Reports
Note: With "Missing" credentials in the Credential Conflict reports, this means the volunteer has not yet interacted with the credential. While you can send the invite directly from the WedgeHR button, the credential itself must also be added to the volunteer's record. Either by the administrator manually or having the volunteer sign the credential themselves. For more information on the Credential Conflict reports click here.
- Log into VolunteerMatters and click Credentials from the left-hand side navigation.
- This will bring you to the Credential Dashboard. From here you can click the Credential Conflicts button link at the top of the screen.
-
This will bring you to the Credential Conflicts page. This page will give the credentials administrator a high-level view on all assignments across all projects in which there is a credential conflict. Credential conflicts occur when a volunteer has yet to attain the credentials required for their upcoming assignment. This will include any credentials not in Approved or Exempt status. For more information on credential statuses click here. You can always type the credential name in the search bar to filter the records as needed.
Here an administrator can view across all projects at one time and make sure to either follow up or instruct an organizer to follow up on those conflicts prior to the assignment beginning.
- Like the Volunteer Credential page, to initiate a new interview request, click the Send Invite button.
- This will open a modal window popup where you can select the proper interview for the volunteer. Then click the "Send Invite" button.
- This close the popup and return you to the Credential Conflict page with a temporary success message and the Wedge button will update to "Send Reminder".
This will be the same process for the Per Project Credential Conflict reports. For more information on accessing those reports, click here.
Sending from the Contact Record
Note: An administrator can manually send an invitation, but this does not automatically add the credential to the volunteer's record. If you are sending an interview request to someone who does not already have the credential, an administrator must manually add the credential to the volunteer's contact record after sending the invite.
- Log into VolunteerMatters and click Contacts from the left-hand side navigation.
- Navigate to the contact you wish to send an interview invitation to, and then click on their name or 'View' button. This will take you to their contact record.
- Once on their contact record, the Wedge button will appear at the top of the screen, to the right of the Volunteer History button. The current status of the Wedge button will reflect if an interview still needs to be sent, an interview has been requested, and is still outstanding, or if it has already been completed. Which will include a link to view the interview at your WedgeHR account.
- To initiate a new interview request, click the Send Invite button.
- This will open a modal window popup where you can select the proper interview for the volunteer. Then click the "Send Invite" button.
- This close the popup and return you to the contact detal page with a temporary success message and the Wedge button will update to "Send Reminder".
In both cases, after the invitation has been sent initially:
- The button will update to Send Reminder
- Once the volunteer completes the interview, the button changes to View Wedge
Selecting View Wedge will open the completed interview for review at your WedgeHR account. Where an administrator within the WedgeHR system can:
- Watch the recorded responses
- Add comments or ratings if desired
- Decide next steps for the volunteer
Recommended Review Timeline
To maintain engagement, we recommend reviewing interviews within 24–48 hours of completion.
Step 6: Updating the VolunteerMatters Credential
After the administrator reviews the report, they will determine whether or not the volunteer is eligible or ineligible for volunteering within the organization according to organization policies and procedures. If the volunteer is deemed eligible, they can be updated as "Approved", and if the volunteer is deemed ineligible during review they can be updated as "Denied".
When the administrator is ready to modify the credential status, they will navigate to the credential for that volunteer either from the Volunteer Credential page or clicking the Credentials button on the contact record itself. Then click the "Edit" button.
This will open up the panel and allow the administrator to change the Credential Status, Expiration Date (if desired), and add any Admin Notes they see fit.
When they are ready, they will click the "Save" button which will return the administrator to the Volunteer Credential detail page with the updated status, expiration date, and new credential history audit entry with the administrator's name, date, notes, etc.
Click here more information on credential administration if needed.
